WORK Tale: "Off the Walls"
I'll be posting more sample work in here, starting with this one. I'm afraid people may get tired of my face sooner or later and thus thought to mix it up by showcasing some of my editorial jobs.
This shoot started out as a portfolio shoot, meaning the photographer called me, asked if I was available a certain day to do a shoot for our respective portfolios for free. Everyone works for free; from the photographer, stylist, and makeup artist to the models. In return, we get a cd. In the US, I think it's called "time for prints" or "time for cd."
Of course, I don't do free shoots for just anyone. Only my favorite established photographers, so that I know I can use the shots in my folio. If the photographer is just starting out, tough luck. I end up being everything then, from lighting director to art director. My time is a bit too precious to babysit newbie photographers (except if they are totally good OR totally cute hahaha).
This particular set was shot by one of the best here in Manila, Dr Marlon Pecjo. Yes, he's a radiologist who made a second, blazing (!!!) career as a fashion photographer. What I like about doing folio shots with Doc is that he usually gives the files to magazines, so our portfolio shoot ends up getting published.
Anyway, this was a sudden shoot. I think he called me the night before and I just went with the clothes I had on hand. Said clothes were already used for a "Seven Deadly Sins" editorial we did a week earlier. Thinking it would remain a portfolio shoot, I thought it would be ok to bring the same. Of course, this ended up getting published. Thank god I always have more clothes than necessary, so not too many were re-used.
As you can see from the final lay-outs, we tired the models out. They were literally jumping off of the walls. Doc Marlon wanted something edgy, to fit the music magazine he wanted to submit it too. I had to deliver clothes wise. I'll post the other editorial where I used some of the same clothing so you can see the difference in styling.
Concept wise, we tried to maximize the bareness of the room. Two people stuck together, bouncing off of the walls. Think a "cleaner" Trainspotting. A bit surreal, but with crisp lighting.
Style-wise, I decided on a palette of black, white and gray, with bursts of color for the end. There actually is one more layout where they're falling on the bed and he's dragging her out but I kind of find the layout too chaotic and decided to refrain from posting it. Anyway, the girl grows more unhinged while the guy less so. I tried to convey that with color.
As with most shoots with Doc, we finished pretty fast. The models got tired from all that jumping around, but the final layouts looked good.
This is one of the cleanest shoots I've done with Doc. There's no nudity! *lol* The most you get is our cute male model in tighty-whities.
Watch out for the next ones I'll be posting...
