There once was a cat named Lillyl. She wandered into our lives for a short but everlasting time. I remember the first time we saw her in our back alley during a walk. Since my hubby has allergies we had to go looking for the cats in the neighbourhood to get our fix. Well that fateful night we found lilly. She came when we called and was so friendly. Little did we know that she was the neighbourhood cat who wandered and roamed as she pleased. She must have followed us or tracked us back to our house just a ways up from where we first met. Next thing I know she was in our yard checking us out. I remember that day as my youngest daughters excitment was so intense. Me of course, knowing how cats can cuddle purr and turn and scratch, I was a bit more leary. As I watched my daughter interact with this new feline I remember talking to myself and the cat of course in my mind telling her that if she ever turned on my daughter that would be the last she would ever be in our yard. Well the love affair was immediate. Lilly would show up and my daughter would squeel and run out to play. Wrapping her up in a blanket and putting her in the stroller. I would tell her to be kind and gentle but really no prompting from me was needed as she loved that cat like no other. We noticed that this cat was special.. in many ways but one physical way was that she had an extra toe. It seems this breed was very near and dear to Earnest Hemingway and has been endearingly called the hemingway cat. For months she spent time in our yard always gentle with my children and loving the attention they bestowed on her and of course the food we gave her. I would bag their clothes and wash them so not to cause my husband any problems. Then one day she dissapeared. My daughter wrote a story about her tonight and cried as she never got to say goodbye. I told her that she could always talk to Lilly as Lilly would always hear her. I told her that Lilly would never really ever be gone. You see I said once someone enters your heart then they never ever truly leave. I will always remember Lilly and the joy, love and learning she brought to me and my girls. The girls and my husband think that a coyote got her but we had had a garage sale the week she dissapeared and there were a lot of people asking about her. I told them all that she was the neighbourhood cat and I thnk someone picked her up. I wish to beleive that she is warm, safe and in someones loving home. The heartache my little one has is an opportunity to learn that really someone, or somehumanpet never ever really leaves your heart once they enter! Lilly we loved you.
