Sounds

Sounds can make you forget the world around you. Even just for a moment, you hear something and everything around you just disappears. Your crap life, your issues, your hurt, your misery, your stress… Gone… but just for a moment. Or sometimes it’s a warning of worse things to come and you wait, not knowing when it’s going to hit you.
Sounds…
You hear a crow squawking at you outside your bedroom window on a Saturday morning and you know the “storm clouds” are gathering. You know something terrible is about to happen. The sound runs up and down your spine. A week later you have to deal with the biggest hurt of your entire life…
Sounds…
Every Saturday morning, without fail, you hear your front garden gate click open. You know for the next couple of hours you’re going to have the best company in the world, enjoy some hot coffee and a menthol cigarette or two. Then your whole world comes tumbling down. The next Saturday you sit and wait to hear the click of that gate. You know you’re never going to hear it again, but still you wait and hope… in complete and utter disbelief and denial…
Sounds…
A door slamming, household items flying through the air and hitting a wall. Glass breaking. Footsteps. Fear, a feeling of complete hopelessness and then anger. Screaming and shouting. Physical violence. How much more of this abuse will you tolerate? You will tolerate it only until you realize there’s more to life, there are things to enjoy, savour and experience…
Sounds…
The sound of the ocean’s waves rushing to shore. Again and again. How calming it is. You sit with your feet buried in the sand, watching and listening. Everything becomes clear and you know what you must do…

A judge’s gavel coming down on her bench in the divorce court. The sound of freedom. You are free to do as you choose. Go your own way and experience your life! Misery no more…

The message tone on your mobile phone. Elation! You’ve been waiting to hear that sound all day. A special message, just for you, and you feel as if it’s okay to carry on with your day. Someone is thinking of you and that seems to make everything more bearable…
Sounds…
The “bleep-bleep” sound of a car alarm being activated just outside your front door. Instant bliss! A knot in your stomach, caused by pure excitement. You’ve waited a couple of days to hear that sound. It was worth the wait, every second of it! Because you know for the next few precious hours you will be surrounded by love, adored… And the whole damn miserable world can go to hell, because all that matters is right there in your arms…
