~~~Sometimes I just wanna go on a beating rampage and beat on everyone who sucks, like the lazy guy who bags my groceries, the old lady who stares at me like I am the freak just because my ring tone is SOAD's BYOB, the a**hole who decides to drive 30 just because he KNOWS I am running 15 minutes late for work already ( I swear, he knows), or even the guy who complains about how bad the economy is when he owns 2 houses, one of which is only used in summer for two weeks. Rough... Somedays, I just wish I had a big, giant hand so I could simultaneously bitch slap the entire world. Or at least, the copious amounts of stupid people in it. The end.

I came across a homeless man today in my travels. There he was, in front of the store window as I pulled into the parking lot. By the time I had shut off my engine, he had already approached. With a cohersed zestfulness, he asked, "Can you spare some change". His face told me he already expected me to say no. "No", I responded with a half forced smile. "I am so broke". No sooner had the words come out of my mouth than I knew it was a lie. We both did. "Thank you", he replied, ever so politely, before walking away with a solemn face. As I watched him float away from where I was, with his tattered clothes and broken spirit, I glanched down into my spotless ashtray full of change, my "stash" of useless coffee money. I turned my engine back on, drove around to where he was, and waited for him to finish with the next person he was 'harassing'. I then motioned him to me, hand extended. He approached, looking confused, by vivaciously reached for my hand. I gave him all the change I had, which was quite a bit, and offered him a job. He looked astonished. "But, I have no address", he flustered. I told him it didn't matter as I handed him my business card...we would work something out with regards to the red tape. He was so taken by me...and as we continued to converse, and he led me down a long, sad road of how he had come to be a drug addict at age 12 and had landed hiself in jail many times over, I noticed several people staring at us, amazed, even disgusted in their insular ignorance, that the pretty blonde girl in the business suit, in her car, was interacting with this petty beggar. My gut wrenched profusely. I thought, Jesus Christ! This is a human being! He had a story to tell...a history. He was flesh and blood....body and spirit, had a heart beat, emotions! He had had a mother, a father...was once a beautiful little child, carefree and exuberant before his innocence had been stolen by circumstance. Were he as lucky as us, to have been given the same opportunies, the same turns of fate, perhaps he would not be in his reality now. Perhaps we, instead of feeling so gluttenously supreme, should thank our lucky stars that we had not been dealt his crippling hand. We then spoke of work details, and he seemed excited by the possibility that someone had given him a chance, maybe believed in him, if only for a moment. Don't get me wrong, I am far from niave enough to think that he really is so poor that he cannot eat. I know enough to know that panhandlers, such as himself, make beyond a pretty coin, despite the general assumption of the public. And I may never hear from him again. But no matter...every moment spent with him was an absolute blessing...for, as he walked away from me the second time, I thought, all of these fuk'n people, with their heads held high in self regard, looking down on me scorningly as I retreated into the store, were but trifling little maggots in my mind. And I was the bigger person, for having mingled with the littlest of persons. It gave me an overwhelming sense of pride...at having known my parents had raised someone decent with a good heart. And as I left the store, groceries in hand, a half an hour later..there he was again, trudging though the hoards of annoyed people rushing to get away from his insignificant self. I waved tenderly...he smiled graciously, through his stained, weathered teeth, and without hesitation, yelled out "Good bye Amanda!". It grabbed me...for I realized in that moment, that had I told my name to any of the self assumed proper ettiquette types surrounding us that day, surely, a half an hour later, thay would not have a clue what it was. I considered it to be a monumental lesson learned. And I will likely never forget this beggar. It was humbling. The fact that I am even writing this may seem to indicate that I, too, am judging. But I am not. I never judge. I am simply wishing to raise a point...that our social consiencesness is so jaded and skewed, that even our very own eyes cannot see it as such. It is sickening, ten fold.



People, go home tonight and read "The Grapes of Wrath". It will change your life.
