I mimic her motions
and create a scarf of my own.

My attention is rapt
and I abandon my work,
leaning forward to study her movements.
I knew I wanted to
be like her,
at least in this craft.

In one way or another,
I’ve succeeded.
And eventually the scarf is made.

As she wound the green yarn
around the needles,
I watched her hands
small and strong,
handling them
like it was second nature.

The blue veins stood out;
Her skin a bit freckled.

I know when I reach her age,
mine will look the same.
As they twist and turn
the clacking needles
around the soft thread,
she creates a pattern
of ridges and valleys.

The lamp next to us
shines on the needles
as she shows me
how to manipulate
the yarn,
