the serpents scales
drifting, sliding, covering
the twinkling, seeking eyes peeking down
upon my bare restless body
a gathering up of light
to cast it forth over my head
and thrown out into night

a tail that has no end
a song that slithers so
a blackened maze of midnight
cut away softly with no teeth
by a gentle plume
and an edgeless wreath

were I to dive up and away
into those illumined eyes
left only to look upon, to leave behind
that vast shelter where I lay
would I give away anything
and continue this drifting sway?

this serpent continues its passing
in a bloodless slither,a soft belay
opaque faces along his belly
with clear eyes that never stir
peering down from that endless vault
changing shapes that never were

the whole world takes a breath
it inhales as it sleeps
and exhales what is left

even the nesting, resting birds
are afraid to stake a claim
with their gray wings tucked away
greeting silence as it came

and the clouds won't risk to move
for fear they should allow
a crack in their own sky
for which they took a vow

if your toes do touch the Earth
will they stir the silent air?
will you create a tremble
will you bring the day to bare?

Nay, just lie in bed and dream
in that half-sleep, half aware
place of smiling, and wishing for
a lovers warm, embracing stare
