What is Britishness? Even more mysteriously - what is Englishness?
What is the attraction that the English have for the heroically poitless endeavour.
Some nations are obsessed with the notion of heroism.
Other nations occupy themselves with progress and endeavour.
Others still with pointlessness.
But the Heroic Pointless Endeavour is a peculiarly English trait.
When I was a child, for example, I typed out all the numbers from 1 to 10,000. On a manual typewriter (this being before the days of the Amstrad and the Acorn)
IN WORDS. From One to Ten Thousand.
And now, I am going to type every nine letter word in the English Language in Reverse Alphabetical Order.
It's Heroic, it's Pointless and by gum, it's English.
