In Greek mythology, Eros was the primordial god of lust, love, and intercourse. The goddess Venus, jealous and envious of the beauty of a mortal woman named Psyche, asked her son, Eros, to use his golden spear to cause Psyche to fall in love with the most vile creature on earth. Eros agreed but then fell in love with Psyche on his own. Some people believe that this story tells of how love can come when desire (Eros) starts to fancy a person's soul (Psyche) rather than that person's body.
