My odd thought of the day.
Over the summer I am planning to volunteer at a hospice. I hope to be strong enough to offer these people comfort in their last moments.

So, on the way home my wife and I stop at Vons. As we approach the store door, I see a "real" homeless person (not one with a bucket and sign) asking for change. I approach him and ask him if he would like something to eat or drink. Overjoyed he asks for beer, chips, and sandwich. I ask what kind of beer, chips, and sandwich he would like. He says, “2/11, Doritos, and sub.” By his speech and mannerisms, I could tell the time he has spent on the streets had taken a toll on his mental faculties. He entered the store with me, I asked him to wait outside and I would return with what he had asked. He said, “Ok” and continued to follow me into the store. Again, I said he could wait outside and I would bring him what he asked for. He again said, “Ok” and continued to follow me further into the store. I grinned and we walked. We went to the deli and found his turkey submarine sandwich, and then we entered the beer isle where he found his 2/11. While taking it off the shelf he asked, “May I have two?” I nodded my head in agreement. We then went and found the largest bag of Doritos before making our way to the cashier. He thanked me and I thanked him, he then asked my name and shook my hand before leaving. I went back into the store for the items we had come to buy. My wife was proud of me and I was pleased with myself. I had the pleasant feeling that accompanies doing the right thing. While approaching the checkout line I was surprised to see my homeless friend in the line yet again. I was unnoticed by both but overheard the conversation between he and the cashier. He wanted to buy cigarettes and held out a dollar to the cashier. The cashier said the cheapest brand at the store was over five dollars. The conversation between the two went on for a few second. The homeless man unable to comprehend that he did not have enough money. The cashier looked back at the growing line and a look of annoyance took hold on his face. I looked over the homeless man’s shoulder at the cashier and said this one was on me. Surprised the homeless man turned and said, “I was looking for you.” I grinned and asked him, “why?” I could tell his recent windfall had made him so happy he was practically confused with excitement. He again shook my hand and thanked me for the cigarettes, while shallow incoherently ramblings began escaping his lips. He then turned, taking his cigarettes and exited the store. My wife smiled at me, as the cashier then rang us up. The bagger looked up and said, “Why did you buy him beer and cigarettes?” I respond simply, “He wanted them, and who am I to tell him otherwise?” Then the cashier said, “He could do without the beer and cigarettes, what were you thinking.” To him I replied, “I only thought one thing. Thank you God, for putting this man my path today.”

My odd thought of the day.
Much of the new employment in America is minimum wage or retail work that offers an unlivable recompense. Please, do not believe the propaganda offered by the news and government. My father earned $50,000 per year working as data entry for Great Western in the 1980's. Thirty years later the typical person does not make that kind of money. In thirty years, one thing that has gone down is the price employers pay their workers. In conjunction, these same American companies out source jobs to second world countries making their products more profitable. Thus, the divide between the rich and the poor has grown exponentially. If you really want to get a real view of the economic health of the country, ask your neighbors, your friends, and their friends how they feel and if they can support themselves without fear in this place we call America. My neighbors fear the loss of their employment as even the loss of one month’s salary would be catastrophic. The global conglomerates have turned America into the, “Land of the Free and home of the Slave.”

My odd thought of the day.
A new semester has started and I have a full course load. I feel unsure about my capability to learn all that I need to. I am frightened that if I am lazy in my lessons it can cost someone their life. I have my interview this week to see if I am able to enter the nursing program. I am confident that if I endeavor to do my best I will be successful.
