Finally, I am free to start writing. So now I can finally Explain what I am doing.
One day, an Idea formed in my mind and I sort of thought that since I usually write on my own, I would co-author a book with my best friend. (She also spends a lot of her free time writing stuff, though this is her first effort at writing a book.) This will be the sixth time I started writing a book. Just in case anyone is interested, this is what happened:
1) Started writing a western, but wiped out the device I stored it on after three month's worth of work.
2) Restarted writing above western, but realized that a prequel would be necessary (being a family sage, it seemed wrong to begin in the middle of it).
3) Started the prequel. Got about Six chapters in, when my mom (I was thirteen at the time) gave the computer to my grandmother. She substituted my motherboard with hers. No computers with which to retrieve the data. At least I got my nifty labtop. The Western series is shelved for the time being (until I get the time to do some proper research into American History).
4) While reading one weekend, a character sort of occured to me. I decided to write about her, but didn't know what it was about. On the way to Mathematics class that Monday (strange how inspiration strikes when you're not thinking about writing), I started with the story line. Thus my first attempt at Fantasy was born. About twenty two chapters (my record) in, I realized that my story wasn't running dramatically enough.
5) Started again. Got to chapter 17. But due to circumstances that I am not going into, I realized that I would never be happy with the book.
Immediately afterwards, the same friend as above (if I murdered she would probably help me dig the hole) and I started a bonfire and burnt all of my hard-copy plans. I then dumped the entire book's file off of my computer's memory.
6) Now I'm onto my sixth book. This one I hope will get to publishment. It's still a Fantasy book (hopefully a series/trilogy), but the concept is completely different from the previous one. The characters, their relationships and groups are much more complex.
These groups bring me to something I am very excited about. My friend and I had lunch today about an idea she had for the book. I really liked it. Basically, she had an idea about a place in the alternate world. It was so uncanny how she managed to find an image so perfect for an aspect of the book before I even got to tell her that I had thought of that aspect.
Anyway. As we ate, I complained about the fact that I am am so in love with one group of people in my cast of main characters, that I'm struggling to expand on another one. We came up with a brilliant solution. She would take one part of the castcharacterize it and I would take the other. We're planning keep going at it until we have a very well-rounded set of characters. That way we might be able to minimize the effect of favouritism. This is my guess as to the why most people co-author books.
While on that topic. Before you decide on following the same road as the two of us, make sure that you have someone who knows exactly how you think and who is as creative as you are. Even though the two of us are really close friends, differences in opinions are due to spring up. Come to think of it... I really need to work out a contingency for the event. Any suggestions?
