Her fist contacted with the wall with a thud.
“Fuck”, she screamed, tears streaming down her face.
“Why, why me? Why now? You stupid fucker, why?”
It was then that her legs gave out from under her and she slowly crumpled into a ball against the wall. Her sobs echoing down the hallway of her apartment complex. The snot flowing out of her nose onto her clothes, the tears making large wet spots on her knees where she rested her face. Her knuckles hurt. She tried to hold back the tears, but they just kept coming, like a torrent. The more she tried to stop it, the harder it became to breath, between the sobs.

She walked outside into the brisk late April night. The few stars that she could see in the city shone like pinpricks of light on this cloudless night of the new moon. The streetlights cast circles of light, burning away the darkness, but never completely succeeding. She walked, from the boundary of light to the foreboding darkness, then back into the welcoming light.

It was chilly. Though the early spring day manages to melt most of the snow, the evening was still cold enough to see the water vapors pouring from her mouth as she exhaled. Her cheeks start to go a little red from the nippy weather, and she pulls her coat closer, to keep the cold out.
