There once was a little whale called Alfred who went to the shop one afternoon to buy some fruit. ON the way to the shop Alfred stopped to tie his lace that had slowly come loose from his joyous skipping and jumping. When the little whale bent over to tie his lace he noticed a tiny bee rolling around on the pavement trying in vain to fly, and in considerable pain.
"What's the matter little bee?," asked Alfred, "why can't you fly away?"
The bee replied, "thank you for caring, but it seems this is my time to leave this earth."
"But why, why now?" questioned Alfred.
"Well i'll tell you cos there's not much time left for me and I want someone to hear my story" strained the bee.
Alfred was a little concerned, but knowing there was little he could do for the bee, he sat down on the pavement and gently collected the bee in his flipper, comforting him in his final moments.
The bee continued, " I was working away today collecting pollen from all the beautiful flowers. It truly was a wonderful day. The sun was out, the breeze was light, which made flying easy, and we'd just found a new garden in flower that will provide us with enough pollen to make 3 months worth of honey. It was really a remarkable day."
"All the workers from our hive had been working away all day when late in the morning we returned to the hive to find one of those terrible human creatures destroying our nest. Now why this human would want to destroy our nest is beyond me. We never mean them any harm but all they seem to do is destroy every living creature they come in contact with," the bee went on, his words slowly starting to break up as he held on to tell his story to Alfred. "So naturally we tried to protect our nest and thousands of workers swarmed around the human to try to scare it away. But still it kept destroying our nest so we had to make sacrifices to protect the queen and the baby larvae in the middle of the nest. As you probably know, us bees can only sting once and then we are condemned to die a slow painful death as I am going through now. So myself and the other workers had to sacrifice ourselves to have any hope of keeping the future of our hive alive. So it was that we took aim and moved in on the human. Some of the workers were lucky enough to die quickly as the human swung its arms wildly, landing fatal blows upon many of my comrades. I hit it in the neck and as i struck, the human let out a deafening scream. I flew away but knew that I would soon lose my strength and that is how I got to where I am now. I do not know the fate of my hive and my queen and all the babies. I can only hope that the sacrifice of my life was not in vain."
"Where was your hive?" enquired Alfred, knowing that there wasn't much time left for the bee.
"Just over there, behind the trees in the park", replied the bee.
"I will find out the fate of your nest and do everything I can to help save it," Alfred said softly. "And i will make sure the humans never harm it again."
"You are an honorable whale," replied the bee, flapping its wings for the last time. "Please live your life to the fullest and don't let the humans destroy your kind. Be strong, be wise and remember I will be watching over you, protecting you..." the bee trailed off as he drifted into an eternal sleep, finally at peace with the universe.
Alfred shed a tear and sat in quiet contemplation for a moment. It would be a turning point in his life and the bee would always be with him in spirit to keep him safe from harm.
