Did you know??
In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship
and it was also before commercial fertilizer was invented, so large shipments of manure
were common..
It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became
heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas.

As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.
After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term

"Ship High In Transit"

on them which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of

methane Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T", (Ship High In Transport)
which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

The history of this word. Now we know!

Well, now......here's something I never knew before.
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future.. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').
Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and mocked the their adversaries by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'
Isn't history more fun when you know something about it?
