Last season was one of those magical years that I never thought would occur with a Philadelphia team. Usually, I've seen it happen against Philly teams. For instance, I remember in the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals between the Flyers and Devils, the Flyers held a 3-1 lead in the series and needed only one more win to be back in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Devils went onto win the next 3 games though to steal the glory.
This year was amazing in that it took the Phillies to get hot at the right time while the Mets panicked and choked. There were 17 games left in the season and the New York Mets were 83-62 while the Phillies were 76-69, giving them a 7-game lead. Most Mets fans were taunting the Phillies' fans and saying how much our team sucked and then it started. The collapse caught me by surprise. I had been writing little blogs on myspace about the Phillies' games, but as the season wore down and the Phillies were losing in frustrating fashion, I couldn't write them anymore. I followed still, but I couldn't stand to write it anymore.
Of course, I was praying for some epic collapse by the Mets. They were cocky and it was sickening. David Wright and Carlos Beltran were running their mouths, same with ol' Lo Duca. I WANTED to see these guys fall apart and they did. It helped that the Phillies owned the Mets down the stretch. They swept them at home, they swept them at Shea Stadium, they won the last 8 meetings of the 2007 season and the last sweep brought the Phillies back into the race and started the Mets' swoon.
Before anybody knew it, the Mets and Phillies were tied 87-72 going into the final weekend of the season. The Mets were hosting the Florida Marlins, everyone expected them to break out of it in time to dominate the fish. Meanwhile, the Phillies got to host the Washington Nationals in front of a buzzing crowd. It was exciting when the Phillies won the first game of the series and the Marlins shocked the Mets to give the Phillies a 1-game lead with 2 to play. It was the first time all year the Phillies were leading the division.
However, it didn't last very long. The next day, the Mets defeated the Marlins and the Nationals played spoiler for a day to even the standings once more. The Mets would have Tom Glavine to face off against Dontrelle Willis for the final game of the year while the Phillies leaned on veteran Moyer to give them a win. If both clubs won or lost, there would be a one-game playoff to decide the division winner in Philadelphia on October 1st.
It didn't look like it would happen though. Before the Phillies even threw out the first pitch, the Marlins scored 7 runs in the 1st inning for a quick lead. Meanwhile, Rollins led off with a single and then stole 2nd and 3rd, scoring the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. The Phillies only had to win and the division was theirs. As the Phillies built up a lead, the Mets collapsed to an 8-1 loss and only minutes later, Brett Myers struck out Wily Mo Pena to give the Phillies their first NL East title and playoff appearance in 14 years. It was one hell of a year!
