Five years ago this weekend, Cpl. Jaime Murphy was supposed to walk down the stairs of an aircraft that would bring him home to his girlfriend, his family, and his friends. They were all so proud of him. He was just finishing his tour of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces in Kabul, Afghanistan, and he knew they would be waiting impatiently at the St.John's Airport. Instead of that walk down the shaky aircraft steps into the arms of his family, he was carried by eight military pallbearers, his casket draped in the flag of the country he loved so dearly. Jaime Murphy was a Newfoundlander, a Canadian, and a very proud member of our country's Armed forces. He was aware of the dangers he would face in Kabul, but he was doing what he had wanted. Standing shoulder to shoulder with his comrades and serve the best country in th world. There had been much said about the underfunded, ill-equipped Forces, but one thing you could not question was the dedication of the men and women who proudly wore the Maple Leaf on their shoulders. Jamie Murphy was the epitome of what a Canadian soldier was supposed to be. He had a deep love for his family, his comrades and his country. He put his life on the line for people he didnt even know and he paid the ultimate price. That day, on the cold tarmac of the airport, the faces of his loved ones told us what kind of person Jamie Murphy was. The cold Atlantic wind wasn't the reason for the chill in the air, it was the loss of another native son.. It was a homecoming no one wanted to share. To his memory, I tip my hat.

Bathed in moonlight, I see him walking slowly along the shore. The waves are gently lapping at his feet. The pale light dances across his well defined shoulders and lean muscles. I hide on a sand bank watching this amazing creature of beauty and intrigue. He stops suddenly, and his body goes still. Has he caught my scent? My heart races in fear and trepidation! Slowly he turns his head in my direction. My heart is pounding so hard he must be able to hear it! As if on cue...the corner of his mouth lifts slightly in a knowing grin. He knows I'm here, and the time has now come for me to pay the ultimate price for my curiousity.

My heart is racing as he turns in my direction. Could I be mistaken? Could I be so lucky as to remain unnoticed? I see his shoulders relax. It seems that whatever has caught his attention has now gone.
He moves to the water as if in slow motion. My eyes are drawn once again to his lean muscular body. The moonlight catches the silver streaks in his flowing hair. It's almost as if his hair was water itself. No true color to it...as dark as night but as brilliant as the moon above! But how can this be? The night must be playing with my eyes.
He moves with such fluid grace. Further into the water he walks, the waves are licking higher onto his body. His smooth skin shimmers and...changes? I shake me head to clear it. Now I know I must be seeing things! Skin can't change like that! Can it?
The air around him comes alive and takes on an entity of it's own. Short hairs are standing on end along my neck and arms. The energy is so intense! He raises his head to the heavens and his arms are streched wide like he is embracing the ocean itself. I feel a shock of warmth surge through me.

What would it be like to to have those powerful arms around me?

I’m lost in my thoughts and didn’t notice the magic that was taking place before me. Where the waves were caressing his firm thighs, there was a change; a shifting you could say. Two strong legs suddenly become one!! Shining blue and grey scales appear at the base of his back, just above the swell of his tight perfect ass. A thin membrane forms between his outstretched fingers. While I stare in awe and disbelief… there is a splash and he is gone beneath the waves! All that remains; the only evidence that he was ever there, is the soft scent of sandalwood in the air and his footprints in the sand. Even now as I stare at the place where he once stood, they are being washed away by the rising tide.
