I honestly do see the allure of what believing in god has on some people.
To believe that there is something- or someone- out there, who will forgive us when the world has turned its back, who will be our rock when the tide tries to drag us away, who will love us no matter what we do, I totally feel the allure of that.
People believe in god (in whatever shape and form they choose) and stay faithful- or atleast try to- to what their god pleases, and take time out of their lives to pray, to worship, to thank, to please god, so that a little bit of goodness may come their way. And as sure as anything, goodness comes to them- however large or small it may be- and solidifies their hope and faith in god so that they can say "look, this goodness came to me because god sent it to me. Therefore, there must be god out there, and god loves me, stands by me, forgives me, and will take care of me." And this makes them feel better, and much less alone.
But what about the people who believe and receive nothing? what about the people who are even more faithfully than others, that dedicate their purpose to god, and receive nothing in return? I am talking about those who have been dealt a foul hand in life, and who have nothing, no one to love them, to stand beside, to be taken care of?
They believe because they have nothing else to hold onto, but the hope that someone, or something, will forgive them, for forgiveness is the last thing that tells us that we are not alone.
