Once a Month (fiction... obviously..)
Kenzie rested her chin in the palm of her hand as the teacher droned on about the female reproductive organs; as if there was an eleventh grader on the planet that didn’t know where babies came from. It was the last period of the day and she was not in the mood to sit through this class.
She looked out the window and the school parking lot where a light covering of snow blanketed the cars and more yet drifted from the sky. She glanced at the clock inwardly smiling at the prospect of going home in five minutes. It was that time of the month and she was not happy about it. She just wanted to go home, do her homework and wait for the night to end. She could already feel a stirring in her gut and a slight pain in her joints.
The bell rang and Kenzie shoved her books into her backpack and slung it over her shoulders following her health class out the door. As she walked by the teacher gave her a pitying smile. It was bad enough the entire school knew of her condition and their pity only made it worse.
As she walked a short distance to home a group of guys from her English class rolled down their window and howled at her. She rolled her eyes and kept walking her breath making a small cloud before her face. Her mother popped her head from out of the kitchen as she closed the front door and asked the generic mom question.
“Hey honey. How was school?”
Kenzie dropped her bag and coat in the entrance way and went into the kitchen taking a still warm cookie form the counter top. “Long. Boring. Uneventful. The usual.”
“And how are you feeling?”
She rolled her eyes and grabbed another cookie heading to her room. “Fine Mom. I’m going to take a nap.”
She lay down on her bed the ache becoming steadily worse. She hugged her favorite teddy to her chest and rolled over drifting off into a fitful sleep.
Kenzie woke up sometime later a stream of moonlight filtering through her window and landing on her face. She groaned once feeling the slight burning beneath her skin and headed to the bathroom to splash some water on her face.
She slipped out of her clothes and into an old t-shirt before leaving her bedroom and walking silently through the house stepping out onto the patio in her back yard. The frigid night air felt good on her skin and she looked up at the stars that dotted the sky against the black silhouette of the forest just past her yard. The full moon smiled down at her mockingly. There was not a human soul or pet left outside. Everyone knew better than that. She ginned as the mournful sound of a wolves howl filled the air followed by another and another.
She groaned as she felt her arms and legs stretch and let out her own howl. Suddenly she could smell everything on the air and animals in the forest shifting nervously seemed incredibly loud and tempting. Thick brown fur grew from her skin and her teeth became sharp fangs. She pulled off what was left of the now tattered old shirt and howled again before running off into woods to join the hunt with her pack mates.
