On Friday, April Nauta updated her status on the popular social networking web site Facebook.

“April Nauta is biking to MTL tomorrow,” she wrote, and as of 2AM “her rear brake is f-ed up.”

By late afternoon Wednesday, her Facebook profile had started to become a book of condolence. The 27-year-old died Tuesday at an Ottawa hospital, a day after the bicycle she was riding was rear-ended by a pickup truck near Wendover, about 50 km east of Ottawa.

A 2006 University of Ottawa graduate in finance, Nauta was cycling single file with a friend when the pair was struck on County Rd. 17 just west of Jessup’s Falls bridge by a Dodge pickup truck at about 7:20 p.m. Pedro Villanueva, 29, the other cyclist, received non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was released from hospital Monday night.

Police say Nauta received severe head trauma and died Tuesday.
