We don't want to touch in public anymore.
Disease is the first assumption. You can spread diseases easily through bodily contact, and with the new 'super-bug' scares it's easy to fall victim to the hysteria. You see people in hospitals use their sleeves to press the elevator buttons. Grandparents watch grandkids through the hospital doorway. Staff are discouraged from touching patients at all, even when they're in pain. Comfort comes from heated blankets.
Touch anxiety has permeated other social areas. Parents hosting birthday parties for their own children are warned not to touch the guests kids--even if they're crying with a skinned knee--because there could be allegations of sexual abuse later. Roughhousing is banned because it's assumed to be synonymous with bullying. Hugging someone is socially awkward for most people.
Handshaking is about as far as we'll go, we're such prudes.
Kissing spreads less disease. Lips are poor transmitters if the mouth is closed.
