Tad Williams? He writes fantasy. The details of his story is a little heavy at the beginning but he is amazing! I really like his series called "Memory, Shadow and Thorn". Really good though it took me forever to start reading it because I would pick it up and then read the first page and not retain anything because of the complexity of his wording. I muscled past the first few pages and it got a bunch better!
