It was warmer now. He moved about a bit waking himself up. Slowly he opened his eyes and stared straight into another pair of eyes. Yikes! Big bright blue. Human!!! His heart raced but the human did not move. It just looked at him. It wasn't a very big human. Was it friendly? He moved a bit. The human still stayed still. It was female. Young. Like him. Then he saw her paw. Would he dare? Carefully he moved his nose forward and sniffed her hand. Smelled ok. Then she spoke. He moved back quickly, but the sounds were kind and reassuring. What was she doing here? Could he trust her?

He looked about him to see where else he could hide. But there was nowhere. Peering out from under a branch he saw it coming. Big and black against the sky. He had never seen anything like it. And it was being pulled by horses. It was moving in his direction and then suddenly came thundering by him. Whatever it was it seemed to be in a hurry. As it shot past him water and mud splashed over him. Eeew! And he had tried so hard to stay dry! Then suddenly a loud crack was heard and the big black thing came to a sudden halt. It seemed to have lost one of it's paws due to the mud. Strange paws. The same shape as the sun. Round ones. It stayed quiet for a moment then suddenly he heard voices. Two tall dark clad figures came out of the thing. They seemed angry. They must be humans he thought. He had heard about them. Frightening folk. Scared he crawled back a bit deeper under the bush. It became all too much for him! And he was so tired. The humans were examening the thing and as one kicked it there was another loud bang in the sky. Were they causing those loud noises? He didn't understand it at all! Then the two humans cut the horses loose and mounted them very quickly. Off they rode down the dark road. And all went quiet. The loud bangs seemed to have stopped as well. Exhausted he fell into a deep sleep.

It is dark. Tonight the stars are not out in the sky. They are probably hiding from the storm. Somewhere under a big bush there's a small fox curled up. He's trembling. With his eyes wide open he stares around him. What is it? What is that sound? That loud bang every single time? He had been born in the spring and the summer had been gentle and warm. There had been rumbling in the air but never such loud noises. It was his first real big thunderstorm. If only the rain would stop so he could make a dash for his hole. Luckily he was protected by the leaves and the sand around and above him. Suddenly another noise got his attention. He could feel the ground trembling lightly too. And it got heavier. And heavier... What was that?!
