well a true tale that happened this past summer,In a place called harpersettlement,on the back side of 300 of Roy Harpers old place, now with new owners, there is a path that goes from the Irving road up to the gate, apx 3 km long.
I was walking along minding my own business smoking a hoot got about 600 yards from where I parked the truck ,on a bend ,with brush on each side and there it was one of the biggest black bears i ever saw ,I seen it but as of yet it did not know I was there.I'm brave I thought, So I kept going towards the big bear,Now I can see the white hair around its nose and the ripples of fat on his massave body.
Ok now im close and now im afraid to go any farther. I just stop, 40-45 feet from it.It still does not know im there and I am making no noise.
I just step off to one side and watch the bear from cover for about 3 min as it is just standing there looking at its right paw, palm up.now im starting to wonder if the bear will get too close if it comes and get spooked and attack me.Does it have cubs.If so it is a dangerous animal. Not a pet.
Iam carring a bag with me so I slip it off my shoulder not making a sound all the time staring at the bear that still does not know im there,I make a move to step out of my cover and start to walk back to truck.I have my bag ready to drop if need be .but there is no way to out run a bear and I have not seen any cubs yet ,hoping its a male really hard now.As I step out I look over my shoulder as fast as i can ready to run for my life.As I do, I see the bears hind quarters running into the woods ,Phew .
The bear did not make a sound as it took off or anytime while I was in that area.I turned back around and continued on. My heart was pumping I could hear it very fast and hard.
I worked on this ground for awhile this past summer and lost 3 gas jugs to coyote and one to a bear.saying one lost to the bear by the size of the teeth marks through the jug.Now after covering much of the 300 I have found 5 dens in total. No other sight of the bear but there was bear tracks all over the place,Knew a bear was around the area before seeing it as there were ripped up stumps and tore open bees nest, logs rolled over ect.. that I came across.
