Today I trekked out to Vereeniging to watch the SAPS destroy 62 000 firearms.
Since a very good friend of mine was shot and killed by his own gun during a hijacking, I firmly support the new firearms laws and in fact would prefer even more draconian measures to be put in place.
I don't like guns. They are cold. I also believe that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" but if there were fewer guns fewer people would be able to kill others. So I was eager to see the destruction.
Do you have any idea what 62 000 firearms translates into? 50 crates on three large flat bed transport trucks. Those crates contained handguns, rifles, shotguns, automatic and semi-automatic machine guns. These guns are those that have been siezed, handed in or found in the last few months in Gauteng. Some have been used in crimes and are marked as such. There are way too many of those.
I feel a lot better knowing that those weapons have been turned into molten scrap metal and will now be turned into nuts, bolts and other useful items. Maybe one day all guns will be turned into something more useful. I hope...
