Does it make sense or is it even possible to completly and totally hate your life but still care about those in it?

How horrible must it be for those who believe their lives are so miserable that the only way for it to get better is to end it? And how much more horrible is it for those who even that option is denied? People who want nothing more than for the endless sadness to go away but are far too needed in their day to day lives to make it stop.
