The Floyd Rose is an interesting guitar bridge. It's a complete and utter bitch to set up and keep level, in order to play outside of standard tuning you need to put on a different guage of string, and finally you need to mess around with the springs or even change the block on the bottom of it. But I gotta say, once you manage to fix it up, you got yourself a lean, mean, shredding machine. So, i've taken up a little side project....
I'm in the process of restoring a Fender Heartfield. It's an all around great guitar (it's almost like a high end Ibanez). I just need to invest in some new humbuckers and maybe a single coil pickup (demarzio's maybe?). I'm thinking if I put 10-guage strings on it, I can tune the guitar down to D and still keep enough tension on the strings to keep the Floyd Rose bridge, level. I've been able to get the guitar in tune, but whenever I divebomb the whammy or move the bar in the slightest, the whole thing goes out of tune. Even when I tighten the screws by the headstock.
Hopefully, i'll be able to fix this problem without too much of a hastle. The one thing that worries me though is that the Floyd Rose on this guitar might not have the right size block on it to stay balanced. If it comes to that, i'll have to spend a few hours in the workshop... arggg.
But with luck, i'll be trying out some Symphony X covers soon! I'll have a guitar for heavier music, and my Aria Pro II tuned in standard for everything else.
*schemes* >:D
