After a few hours (yes hours) of shopping for a pair of jeans, I have called it quits for the day. I thought I knew what I was looking for, but as with all women's clothes shopping I was sadly mistaken. I thought it would simply be me going in and finding my brand of jeans in my size with the correct styling. I was oh so very wrong.
It's bad enough women's clothes rely on the Small Medium Large sizing for length of jeans, but they also have made up numbers when it comes to size. This number isn't the number of inches or centimeters around the waist, or even hips, it's just a number. Maybe that's to make me feel skinnier, but I really would prefer a functional number. Something that has actual information behind it so that I know it's my size. Not just my size if the jeans are this one brand. Seriously a size 8 (not my size - the last time I had a single digit for a size, I was a single digit age) can be a multitude of different sizes all based on which brand you happen to pick up. If there is an industry standard, it is not being enforced. And the length of the jeans? Why do designers recognize men as having a multitude of heights, but think women are only small medium or large when it comes to inseam length? Apparently, I am none of the above. The small were really shorts for me, the mediums didn't make it to the ankle, and then the large was really for the 5'10'' woman. I wasted all that fucking time looking for a single pair of jeans that:
1) went around my waste and hips without me having to suck it in
2) managed to be the right length
3) happened to be boot cut
4) didn't make me look ridiculous as usually happens when I wear women's clothing
It was 4 hours of failure. And 4 different stores. And a horde of fucking christmas music. And wall upon wall of ugly, UGLY women's clothes. I tried the men's section in each store, but my size there is quite popular (embarrassing) so they usually sell off first. It's sad that I was able to find something the last time I needed some jeans, but no longer.
Quite frankly, I would love to have been born a boy if only for their clothes. They had some awesome shit out there, and I was lucky to find a single rack of jeans in the women's section - not the maternity or girls or juniors sections. Am I crazy in remembering a wall of jeans at these places? Each place I went to still had that for the guys...maybe I'm dreaming...
I'm not saying the clothes even need to make me look hot (what's that?) or pretty, I just need something I fit into and can wear without looking like a joke.
Is that asking too much?
