LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
In a dark wood
Where the dead wind sighs
Lives a black-hearted girl
With fire in her eyes.
Her abattoir quakes
With the squeals and the cries
Of an unwary pig
In pain as he dies.
His fellows in the sty
Get to feast on his head
While she grimly cuts,
Her hood and hands stained red.
Sweetbreads in basket
And hatchet in tow,
She throws up her hood
As her pigs watch her go.
Between char-black trees
And shadows of the end of day
The silent birds and beasts
Watch Red make her way
Over pitted rocks
And dry river-beds,
Until a new sound
Brings a smile to old Red.
A young girl crying,
Her hair a bright gold,
Cowers in the clearing
And shivers with the cold.
Her dear dog is rabid
And somewhere in the wood.
“I’ll help you find him,”
Said smiling Red in her hood.
She ties the bloody garment
Below the girl’s hair.
The basket of dripping treats
Is placed in her care.
“Run to my mother’s,
Don’t stop till you get there.
Never, ever look back,
Do you hear me? Don’t you dare!”
The girl ran off sobbing,
Bright red in the night.
Red removed her hatchet
Keeping the hood within her sight.
The dog in its daze
Smelt blood and fear.
It loped after the girl,
Hungry. She was near.
The beast saw her running
And let out a howl.
The girl cried out,
Tears streaming beneath her cowl.
She reached the house
And banged on the door
But before it could open
The dog knocked her to the floor.
Jaws snapped and foamed
As crazed yelps filled her ears.
The world grew dark
Stained by blood and tears.
Then Red pulled it off,
Her nails in its fur,
She threw it into a tree
Before it turned on her.
Her blade cut deep
The dog was wracked with pain.
But with mad eyes glaring,
It attacked again.
They fought with savage fury,
Ragged tooth against sharp blade.
The young girl could only watch
As around her the battle raged.
The hatchet found the throat
And soon the dog was dead,
Choking on red foam
And stumbling as it bled.
Red and the girl then had lunch,
Filling Mother’s house with glee.
And, despite the dog,
They live ever after,
Happily.
