I read recently an article advising that bodies which had been donated for medical research could actually be used for the advancement and practise of plastic surgery procedures. Not only those which gave people a better quality of life such as the correction of disfiguring ailments, but also those such as breast augmentations which arguably can be said to enhance people’s lives also. This article was dismissed by one reader as irrelevant, but news and information is always relevant to someone. I’m sure a number of people have been more than happy to donate their bodies to what they believe may be the cure for cancer and I am also sure that this article and others like it may make us think twice. That is a very good thing, because if we are getting this information from an article on a newspaper website rather than from the facility itself, something is very wrong. One way or another, information that is being withheld or cleverly hidden will surface, especially with resources such as the internet so easily accessed.
Personally, I would not donate my body to science; I would prefer to give my family the closure that I know they would get from ensuring that I was laid to rest peacefully. Though I can definitely understand why others would do it and do not think any less of them. For people to be aware that their donation may be used in the name of vanity and to still go ahead with it and take the chance and hope that their donation may actually be used for the advancement of medical knowledge or the training of surgical practices that may save lives, they deserve the utmost respect.
