The Night the Moon fell from the Sky
It was October 1939, in Springfield, Missouri sometime around 7:30pm. Folks around town saw the Full Moon rise into the sky just like it always did, but then something seemed to go wrong. Alarmingly, the Full Moon began to fall from the sky like a giant meteor. One witness described the Moon had looked about two hours high in the sky when it suddenly turned into a ball of fire and fell from the sky. Folks said the Moon could be seen very low in the sky burning for 5 or 10 minutes.
People were astonished! No one had ever heard or seen such a thing. The morning newspaper read "Moon falls on Strafford Route 3." But there were doubters who did not believe such a thing could happen and right they were! As it turned out, that flaming Moon was in fact a weather balloon meeting its' demise as it fell through the atmosphere.
And as it turned out, the Moon wasn't even full that night. Instead, it was a barely visible crescent!.
