Three Words
A bead of sweat dripped down my neck, and was caught on my white shirt. I wiped my forehead, which was covered in sweat. I couldn’t take this. I looked at my hand. Not Good… I thought to myself. I looked to the scoreboard, hoping that it would be different this time. It wasn’t, after two minutes of sitting and thinking the score hadn’t changed.

Of course it hadn’t changed! I shouted at myself. Scores don’t just change without anything happening! And that was true, especially in this game. I looked left to right, the crowd was there, hush as a cold January night. “It’s your move, still.” My opponent said. He looked at me, like he was better.

I’ll never forget his face, never. It was dark. He happened to be sitting in the side of the room that wasn’t lighted. He held his pose with confidence, I bet now he knew beforehand he knew he would win. I couldn’t let him though. I was nervous, however, and wasn’t sure what move I should have made. I regret my move to this very day. I could have won if I wouldn’t have made it.

It was the national championships! National! The prize was 1,000,000 dollars and a trip to Japan to be in the World Finals! It was a chance every player of this game had dreamed of. I was so sure that I would win, so I asked the question.

I gulped, still a bit nervous. I closed my eyes, and all the memories of getting here came rushing back to me. Filled with new found confidence, I began to speak. My words were clear and concise; they would have cut the tension in the air if the tension had been butter. I muttered three words that I still carry with me to this day. Three words that ruined that match for me. Three words I was so confident in.
