Its a sad day. I have to say goodbye to one of my pets today. Not a human pet, not a pet that has been bought, that I can get back. Goodbye to one of my feline pets, as he falls beneath the pressure of a terminal illness. Its been awful to watch him fade, to watch the flesh melt off his bones, but I'll always remember his as robust, full of attitude, and vigour. I'll always remember him starting fights, and being perpetually grumpy. I'll always remember him getting on the counter, refusing to drink from anywhere but the sink. I'll always remember how this warrior of a cat turned into a baby in his mothers lap, suckling at her fingertips like a newborn kitten. Tigger was always extreme. Whithout question, one of the most beautiful cats I've had the pleasure of aquainting myself with. Although this house will be much quieter, much more peaceful without him, it will also be much more empty, much more cold.

Tigger, though you're still with us for the time being, I know its only a matter of days, perhaps hours, before you travel on. We'll always remember you. We'll always miss you.

After a while...

After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn that love doesn't mean possession
and company doesn't mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of an adult not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build your roads today
because tomorrows ground is too uncertain for plans
and futures have ways of falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
that you really are strong
and you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn...
