I believe that anything that could possibly happen at any given time, gives you a reason to prepare yourself for it. Because, lets say the world gets to the point where nations are battling each other with potential nuclear threats, then if something like that were to happen and there were survivors-there'd be countless numbers of people who wouldn't know what to do to make life work because their entire lives they relied on technology to do everything for them.
And it wouldn't even necessarily have to take a nuclear war to start something like that-it could be a power failure due to extreme weather conditions or something. Eh...I dunno.
