The diamond mine was dark. I often swore our adventure started here. My companion and I had gotten off the cruise ship on this mysterious, foggy island somewhere off the shore of India.
I doubted his rabid sincerity and enthusiasm. I had been looking for this perfect gem for my entire life. It was rumored to have the power to give the wearer what he most desired. Ponce de Leon, you were a fool, I muttered to myself. Only I didn't know I was the fool.
Jason and I set off on foot after our local guide would go no further. Superstitious nonsense about witches and evil curses. Our guide had not been old by any means anyways. The cave itself was buried at the foot of this statue. We entered into the big toe and I can't forget that smell. A putrid mix of rotting tomatoes and scattered hopes. All that I cared about was that we were here.
Little did I know that this diamond would be the end of everything. Or the beginning, if that's how you wish to put it.
