The Moirae [ Μοῖραι ]
"the apportioners"
Collectively they are the fates, weavers of destiny for mortal and immortal alike. They serve the higher power of Ananke "inevitability." There are three goddesses, each encompassing a different aspect of fate.

Κλωθώ (Clotho)
"spinner"
Spins the thread of life from her distaff. She is a youngest of the fates, the maiden aspect of the triple goddess. In other traditions she is the goddess called upon in the ninth mouth of pregnancy to aid in birth.

Λάχεσις (Lachesis)
"disposer of lots"
Measures the length of each being's life thread, deciding the duration of their existence. She also decides their destiny with her measuring rod. She is the mother aspect of the triple goddess, a stern woman of respect. In other traditions, she is said to appear within three days of a child's birth to decide their fate in life.

Άτροπος (Atropos)
"without turn"
Known as "the inevitable" and "the unturning" she is the one who cuts the thread of life, and chooses the manner of one's death. Encompassing the crone aspect of the triple goddess, she was often portrayed as unfeeling and foreboding, as she was feared because of her power over death. Hesiod's "Theogony" portrays her dark nature with his description of her "abhorred shears."

Though it is thought by some that the Fates are daughters of Zeus and Themis, a titan, and goddess of order, Hesiod describes them as daughters of Nyx "night" alone. Though Zeus and the other gods ruled over the universe, they were still subject to the will of the Fates. Though seen as uncaring, the Fates have on occasion heard the pleas of others, and though they cannot undo their own decisions, they may use substitutions.

That’s why I understand if you do hate me.

Even though our life together had to end like this,
I still wouldn’t trade it for the world.
We had some wonderful years together.

Well this letter has gone on too long so I’ll say goodbye.
I told the nurse to give this to you after I’m gone.
That means that as you read this,
I’m already dead.

I can’t tell you to remember me,
but I can’t bear for you to forget me.

These last few years since I became ill...
I’m so sorry for what I did to you, did to us...
You’ve given me so much and I haven’t bee able to return a single thing.

That’s why I want you to live for yourself now.
