I just wrote a poem taking the persona of Emily Dickinson's supposed lover/sister in law, Susan. Emily would write countless letters to Susan professing her love and infatuation. I imagined if Susan loved Emily too, what would her thoughts be. Keep in mind that "my" Susan was married with children when she wrote this love letter to Emily. Susan's husband and Emily's brother, Austin, had a mistress named Mabel. Also, in the last line i mention the sea, which from what i understand, emily had a love/hate relationship with. she always seemed to mention it in HER poetry.
To Emily Dickinson
Sweet Emily, my one line a week
not one but two,
or more,
for I long to be with thee
Your sweet smile,
tender with delight,
I long to hold you
from daybreak 'til night
Austin is in Mabel
and the children are asleep,
alas I dream of a time
when you too I shall keep
Close to my heart are you
sweet darling
a love to never end.
I keep you there 'til morning break
then to you goes my head
Dear love, sweet cherished,
long have these walls imprisoned us,
tear them down I beg of you
we shall run away if we must
But until then
keep me alive
tell me you love me
so that I can thrive
Heartfelt letters
of worship and lust:
Fill me with joy
all the day if you must.
My solemn promise
is to love you
through leaps and bounds
but Austin is home
and the candle has wilted down.
Good night sweet love
and dream of me
for one day
we shall walk hand in hand
together by the sea.
