OFF THE DEEP END
Sweet sweat pours
and you're shaking like a leaf
before a door, wide open
but the sunlight across the way is shut off,
and for the first time in your life
you're not sure if you'll make it out
with a working spine.
Everyone's cheering,
they're coaxing and tempting
and they've got your back
(will they come after,
if you don't come out?)

So you back up.
and you run with flailing arms.
You cant see a thing.
You just keep running,
until there's no more land beneath your feet.
You can hear the air
whizzing past your ears
and the jagged rocks flow,
following the sound
as you plunge.

And now you're stuck,
with your head under water.
