Cancer Survivor
by: Carrie Sorensen, Melanoma Cancer Survivor since 2004
Cancer Survivor?
I don’t feel like a cancer survivor.
I didn’t lose my hair.
I didn’t lose my lunch.
But I lost pieces of myself.
Cancer Survivor?
What is a cancer survivor?
I didn’t go to support groups.
I didn’t introduce myself as a survivor.
But I was afraid so afraid of what the future would bring.
Cancer Survivor?
Is that me?
I don’t have some great long story to tell of my survival.
I don’t have friends who went through the same ordeal.
But I do have the memories that will haunt my days.
Cancer Survivor?
What does the future hold?
I don’t have to go to special appointments.
I don’t have to remember my cancer remission date.
But I do have to watch and wait for the day when something new will appear.
I am a cancer survivor, I have the small 4 inch scars all over my body as proof.
I am a cancer survivor, I know the fear of hearing the doctor say “You have cancer”.
I am a cancer survivor, I have the memories of what came after those three frightening words.
I am a cancer survivor, I know the concerns of what the future will hold.
My name is Carrie and I am a cancer survivor.
