Red Valley Pack Alpha…
Awikiara awoke to the black wolf nudging her. She had hoped that it was Nolka and his herd that had returned, but it wasn’t. The black wolf laid something in front of her and backed off. He laid down nearby and watched her as she eyed the rabbit. The rest of the pack joined him and Awikiara sniffed the rabbit before taking a bite. She whimpered as pain shot through her. She definitely had hit the ground hard and she could feel it in the shoulder.
The black wolf watched Awikiara eat. He didn’t even know her name, but without his pack she was dead. No lone wolf survived without a pack. His pack fell asleep and he got up. Walking over to the white wolf he licked her snout. “I’m Shadow” he said to her. With it being spring he knew most of the females would be going into heat and if he was right the wolf before him was old enough to bear pups. He still hadn’t figured out why the deer herd had been with her this morning. Deer and wolves just didn’t get along. Not even as friends. Wolves hunted deer. That’s just how it was. Yet an entire herd had surrounded this wolf at his paws.
Awikiara nipped at Shadow as his tried to nuzzle her. He jumped back and then laughed as she gave him an irritated growl. She didn’t understand why he even cared if she lived or not. He had a pack and she was a lone wolf. No one needed a lone wolf. That’s what all the packs had said.
“You’re definitely feisty. You’ll make a great alpha in my pack. I just don’t get why an entire herd of deer would sleep around you. Deer don’t trust wolves. We hunt them” he said. “What is your name? I know you have one.”
“Awikiara” she whispered. It was all she said before she closed her eyes and fell asleep. She dreamt of Nolka and his herd. She wished it was him that was laying next to her and his herd nearby. But it wasn’t.
Nolka had returned to where Awikiara was, but he seen the pack near her. The black wolf laid next to her licking her snout. ‘Maybe she’s better off with the pack than his herd’, he thought to himself. There was nothing he could do for Awikiara with the pack there. He moved his herd to one of their usual sleeping spots and they slept till early morning.
Awikiara awoke to the pack missing. She sighed in relief and tried to get up. But she didn’t have the strength to. Nolka walked up to her and nudged her in an attempt to help her get up. Awikiara licked his nose. “Thanks Nolka, but I’m not strong enough yet” she said to him. “Where were you last night? I missed you.”
“By the stream. When we came back the pack of wolves were here” Nolka replied. “Don’t worry. I’ll always be near if you need me. Anyways if seems that one wolf likes you. We’re going to graze in the valley for awhile.” He nudged her again and laughed as she licked him.
Shadow watched from the bushes. The herd had returned and the buck was nudging the wolf trying to get her on her feet. She had licked the buck like they were friends. It was the oddest thing he had ever seen. As long as her and that buck were friends he wouldn’t go after the herd. He didn’t want Awikiara to hate him since he wanted her as his mate. He knew some of his pack were getting jealous, but he had the feeling that the white wolf could hold her own in time. He wasn’t sure of her size, but she was big. He smiled as the herd left and he had a chance to be alone with Awikiara. He picked up the rabbit and walked over to her. He watched the buck look back at him. He nodded to the buck and turned his attention back to Awikiara.
“Your buck I take it. Not every day a wolf befriends deer” Shadow said. He licked her snout and sniffed her again. She wasn’t in heat, but that didn’t stop him from wanting her. “I don’t know why you have no pack. I would think any pack would kill to have you.”
“No pack has ever wanted me. Wolves don’t have blue eyes. All of them think there is something wrong with me. That I might be blind or not able to have pups” Awikiara said. She looked at Shadow as he licked her shoulder.
“Well I want you and there is nothing wrong with your eyes. You can obviously see and I don’t think there is anything wrong with you. Just that you are different. I’m guessing one of your parents wasn’t a wolf” he said. Shadow licked her neck and then nuzzled her chin. “You’re the most beautiful wolf I have ever seen” he whispered.
Awikiara didn’t know what to make of Shadow. No wolf had wanted her yet he did. She closed her eyes as she nuzzled and licked her. They fell asleep together and Shadow smiled. In time she would be his mate.
