After Work on Friday the 13th, I was in the parking lot of City Hall in the City of Waterloo, Ontario. As Im sitting in my car, I see this old man riding an electric mobility scooter down the middle of the lane. I watch as a lady and her husband were pulling out and the Lady driver (of course ;) almost HITS him!! She didnt and he waved his cane at her as he whizzed by... Whoa! I thought, whats he up to???
I start my car, after saying Good Night to Joan( Hi Joan V) and begin my trek home. For some reason, I went out the back exit of the parking lot, and within seconds what do I see?? The same old man who just whizzed by has now toppled over his scooter when coming off the road and trying to drive up a ramp onto the sidewalk!! He is lying in the road on his side with the scooter on him! I pull over immediately to help, as does another Lady motorist (whom I thought was going to run him over!) and go to his aid. Two other young ladies come over to help as well.
We check him out, I give him a once over before moving anything, and then lift the scooter off of him. One lady is helping me, the other two are helping "Mr. T" up off of the road.
We get him up to the sidewalk, hes a little disorientated. Then I smell ... BEER!! Mr. T is drunk driving an electric scooter! We sit him in the scooter, get some info from him, and do a once over ,, the scooter isnt running. Luckily, he lives at the old age home just up the street. The other Lady driver goes over to the building to get some information, and maybe some help. In the meantime, the other two girls and I are chatting with Mr. T.
He takes my hand and looks at me all sly and says " Ive had a great day! I met a bunch of my friends and went over for some drinks!" I hold his hand and say " Mr. T, you know you are driving this scooter drunk?" Mr. T starts laughing... " Im a bad boy!"
The story gets a little worse. Mr. T's scooter wont run, the two ladies stand him up and I do a once over looking for connections that maybe jarred loose. none.
Meanwhile, Mr. T is being held by no one, and goes to walk to the front of the scooter, falls off the same edge of the sidewalk that got him in this mess to begin with and falls flat out backwards and bounces his head off the road!! I see this happen in slow motion, shouting "grab him!".. too late.
Mr. T is now unconscious on the road. I ask the Lady driver to call 911 as this is going downhill.
Ambulance shows up in about 5 mins!!!! I was amazed!! Mr T. was just coming too.. I again gave him the once over, directed traffic around us and the ladies were keeping him calm and the other Lady driver was flagging the ambulance down.
The paramedics were great! They gave him a once over, got him onto a gurney and decided to get him checked at the hospital. Good call! Brain bleeds can cause strokes 24 hours out! The paramedic turns to me and asks me if I am family.
I tell him that I and these other three ladies saw Mr. T in a bad way and rushed to help. He looked at me and said " Thank You, not many people stop out of the goodness of their hearts anymore." I was sort of shocked by this...
We all said we were just wanting to help where help was needed.
Off they went.
Now, by this time, a number of tenants from the building and some of Mr. T's neighbours have come out to see whats going on. An older lady and her husband take the scooter back for Mr. T. The wife stops and shakes all of our hands.
" Thank You" she says, " there are not many people willing to help as you all have today"
This is the second time I am shocked by such a statement! Are people really so callous as to NOT help a fellow person when in need?????
We all thanked each other for the help, got into our vehicles and hoped for the best for the 83 yr old, rascally, Mr. T..
God be with him.
